The goal of this lesson/project will be for the students to gain a basic understanding of how the stock market works. Many of them have an idea of what the stock market is (a quick way to get rich in their minds), but very few, if any, actually understand how it operates and what information is important.
Specific objectives will include the following:
1. Be able to define basic information and terms including stock, P/E ratio, dividend, last/close, volume, 52 week high/low, and market capitalization.
2. Through the analysis of these indicators and other information (news, expert opinion, etc.), be able to determine why they may or may not want to invest in a particular stock.
3. Use financial websites to participate in a group stock portfolio project where they will have to select stocks based on the group's analysis, track the stock prices and market conditions, and buy/sell stocks to achieve maximum profit.
